Biden Announces $1.2 Billion for EHRs

“Expanding the use of electronic health records is fundamental to reforming our healthcare system,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, unveiling the grants with Biden in Chicago.

“Electronic health records can help reduce medical errors, make healthcare more efficient and improve the quality of medical care for all Americans.”

The grants will be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and be made available in 2010, the statement said.

  1. There are already dozens of viable companies which provide assistance to physicians regarding EHR selection. These include sortable lists of hundreds of EHRs as well as videos concerning the selection process, such as can be seen at http://www.ehrtv.com and other locations.

These have been started, almost universally, with a trivial amount of funding, in comparison to the almost $1,000 per physician earmarked in this $589,000,000 funding.

I look forward to seeing how much more sophisticated these government run centers will be in comparison to the currently available commercial enterprises!
